Greg Souser, Director of Technical Operations for Monitronics, a large alarm manufacturer, got into the security industry in 1997 with Protection 1. He spent 10 years at Brinks Home Security before joining Monitronics in 2008. “Being in the security industry for over 16 years, I have really seen a lot of change since the basic hard-wired system using traditional landline phones for communication,” he said. Seltzer calls owning a security system “a necessity in today’s fast-paced world,” especially when you can tie in the benefits of home automation. Here’s how he stays secure on the home front.
What kind of system do you have?
I have the Go!Control by 2GIG with integrated Z-Wave along with a Verizon 3G cell.
Why this particular set up?
Besides the security, my system features indoor/outdoor cameras, a front-door lock, a thermostat, front doorbell, and some light modules. I really like the interaction I have with my system and the notifications that are included. … Getting reminders and having control right from my mobile devices gives me the freedom and peace of mind to interact with my system from anywhere in the world. I control the thermostat to adjust the temperature when the alarm is set in “away” mode so that it maximizes savings both in the summer and winter.
What is the one aspect of your security system that you wouldn’t want to live without?
This spring Texas had some violent storms. My wife and I were awakened one night by a panel warning that we had strong weather moving into the area. It turned out we had just suffered a few broken tree branches, but having the peace of mind that our system has this added feature is something I would never want to go without.
Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends?
I think of all the advances that security has seen in just the past couple of years with home automation and interactive services. I look for this trend to continue. Additional home automation with garage doors, sprinkler systems, pools and spas, refrigerators and maybe even GPS are some things we may see integrated into home security systems.
